Toothache Pain Relief

To those who have experienced it, tooth ache is one of the most irritating pains you can encounter. It can range from a mild throbbing, to sharp stabbing, and can be quite distressing when it becomes severe. Fortunately, there are various tooth ache pain relief methods that you can try at home before visiting a dentist who can find the pain’s source and treat it.

Tooth ache is usually caused by damage or inflammation. Damage in the form of cracks should be treated by a dentist ASAP. Inflammation can be caused by one of many things, including abscesses, other infections, and gum disease. Regardless of the cause, you should first turn to an over-the-counter medication. One that is ibuprofen based will help you minimize the swelling, resulting in a reduction in pain. However, if you are pregnant, experiencing diarrhoea, or a serious medical condition, you should consult a doctor before taking ibuprofen based products. Alternatively, you can try something that is paracetamol based; as paracetamol is a weak analgesic, it can help to block the pain. Those who need something a little stronger should consider discussing co-codamol with a pharmacist, particularly if the pain is stopping them from sleeping.

If you have found that over-the-counter remedies do not work, or you would rather try a home remedy instead, there are multiple options available to you. One of the most effective home remedies for tooth ache is clove oil; by mixing a few drops with two tablespoons of olive oil and dipping some cotton wool in it, you can create a numbing dressing that will provide temporary relief. For a toothache that has come as result of swelling, you may want to try biting down on a clove of garlic; as garlic acts as a natural antibiotic, it can help minimize the infection that is causing the swelling, which in turn provides pain relief.

There are also home remedies available that are not entirely natural. If you have some Halls’ menthol sweets to hand, or can go to a shop that sells them, bite down on them around the affected area. As these sweets contain a numbing agent that is designed for the throat, you will gain some relief. In addition to this, you may also want to try using Vix Vapour Rub, or another form of menthol chest rub. By applying some to a cloth or tissue and pressing it to the side of your face for 15 minutes, the warming effect you will experience will provide relief.

Tooth ache pain relief comes in many forms. You can choose to engage in home remedies, or you can purchase over-the-counter medication. To fully address your pain, you should talk to a dentist who can seek out the root cause and treat it.
